Located 35 miles off the coast of Venezuela, CuraÙao is neighbor to Aruba and Bonaire. At 66 miles long, Curaçao is the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles. It is part of the Dutch Leeward Islands, also known as the Dutch Caribbean. The island was developed as a miniature, tropical Holland. Willemstad, the capital, is noted for its brightly-colored, Dutch-style houses and Cunucu dwellings (based on African-style mud and straw huts). Although English and Spanish are widely spoken, the official island language is Dutch. The Airport is 15 minutes from Willemstad and close to most hotels. A Passport is required to enter the Island as well as a return airline ticket. Curaçao has a population of 144,000 with an ethnic diversity which spans 50 different cultures. These cultures are celebrated through the museums, festivals and holidays on the Island. The island offers many sight seeing options. The harbor has a floating market where colorful barges full of agricultural produce are moored. Nearby is the striking new market building. The hilltop forts (many now converted into restaurants) offer stunning views over the island and the Caribbean. With an average temperature of 81¼ F and tropical trade winds year round, the island is an excellent spot to escape the cold, northern winters. 150 feet of underwater visibility, easy access to wrecks, caves and reefs; over 400 species of fish, sponge, coral and crab; and over 100 dive sites; are why Curaçao is rated as among the top 3 world wide shore dive destinations. It is also an excellent dive location for novice divers. CuraÙao offers excellent shopping. In fact it is considered one of the finest shopping islands of the Caribbean. When the sun goes down, visitors can enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants offering a wide variety of interesting cuisines. The casinos are also a popular option for evening entertainment. Dress is tropical casual, although some casinos require jackets for men and some restaurants discourage shorts and sandals.
